Five years ago, Hagerstown Community College President Jim Klauber proposed the idea of Washington County working to achieve ACT Work Ready Community status. That goal is now a reality, with 106 businesses having signed up to participate in the program.
“I’ve seen the success of this program first-hand in other communities and I’m excited to watch its positive impact here,” said Klauber. “These businesses are quickly seeing the value of working with this designation. The power of broad partnerships, using WorkKeys NCRC and attaining the ACT Work Ready Community designation, will take our economic development to the next level.”

With recently granted National Reporting Service provisions, WorkKey Applied Math and Workplace Documents assessments may now be deployed to document Educational Functioning Level. Improvements to the assessment flow help workforce programs accomplish more with less and enhance the overall customer experience. Josh Duplantis, Ph.D., dean of workforce and economic development at Coastal Alabama Community College in Bay Minette, Alabama, joined ACT at the ACT Workforce Summit last fall to talk workforce and workforce preparation. He shared information about what groups of people need immediate workplace support — all of them! — and expanded by discussing the importance of mentorship.
Josh also speaks to how important micro-credentialing in the stackable model are in building learner confidence, especially for transitional workers who have been “on the sidelines” and not as involved in the workforce or for workers who live in rural communities. Meet JaQuan Ross, a resident of Gary, Indiana who came to WorkOne Gary on a path to a modern apprenticeship in carpentry. WorkOne administers WorkKeys Assessments to help measure foundational skills required for success in the workplace. WorkKeys helps measure the workplace skills that can affect job performance. College of the Canyons’ fourth Uniquely Abled Academy (UAA) Cohort graduated Friday, May 19th. This program continues to achieve amazing success in providing hands-on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine training to high-functioning individuals on the Autistic Spectrum. Similar to our past UAAs, this Fast Track training has 100 percent completers. Thanks to an incredible partnership with our host industry, B&B Manufacturing, the collocated Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) provides NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) industry credentials to all graduates.

Lisa Hawk, director of corporate training and business development at Forsyth Technical Community College, joined us last fall at the ACT Workforce Summit. We asked her to share how digital badging helps individual job seekers and the workforce at large in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina, community succeed.
“We utilize digital badging to recognize that individuals come into us already with skills that are appropriate for the workforce. And, we utilize digital badging to assist them in gaining employment immediately, while they are working on earning additional skills that will enhance their income so that they have a sustainable wage for themselves and their families.”
Lisa goes on to say that Forsyth Technical Community College aligns their training, the ACT WorkKeys assessment, and employer needs to ensure their learners have the technology-based skills their employer partners demand.
